These stones are natural basalt without the addition of chemical waxes or coatings. They will turn black once they are oiled. Basalt that is suitable for hot stone massage is normally grey. Although natural black basalt does exist, it is extremely rare for it to be suitable for hot stone massage as it is generally much too grainy. Because people see black basalt massage stones (which is how they look, and remain, after they have been oiled for the first time) an expectation has developed that this is how they should be when you buy them. This has led some manufacturers to use chemical waxes or coatings to give grey basalt a black appearance. This has the additional downside of making the stones lose the natural "grippiness" they have with the connective tissue and this slipperiness makes them less effective when used to massage the body.
